Heather G Lowe-Sims
Artist Heather Lowe studied an art foundation course in the the UK then trained as a fabric designer and continued her education in the arts studying a degree in multi media textiles.
Heathers career in the Arts has spanned over a period of 44 years.
Designing fabrics for Laura Ashley, Liberty and Sanderson Heather then went on to lecture at the University of Wales on the Art Foundation course and as Head of Fashion and Textiles. She has worked as an artist in residence in over eighty different schools and has led many community art projects both in Wales and in Australia.
Heather was awarded first prize for her textile work at the Welsh National Eisteddfod and has exhibited her art work nationally and internationally throughout her career and ran her own gallery in Wales.
She has now established her own art studio and gallery in Karridale.
Oriel Karridale Gallery is a small gallery run by Heather showcasing a diverse selection of exciting art. Heather lives on site producing her innovative mixed media art in her studio.
Think sumptuous textiles, luscious colours, natural materials with threads and fibres scattered throughout the pieces which are mostly inspired by nature.
Travel diaries consisting of many small sketchbooks and tiny paintings document her interests and inspirations and the changing colours and cultures from around the world.
Heather loves to utilise different materials in her work. Unusual drift art bird sculptures, sea drift maidens and beautiful garlands are all executed creatively and add to her gorgeous collection of textiles and paintings.
Paintings vary in size from tiny postage stamp paintings with intricate details to large canvases. Free standing paintings appear on beautiful ancient jarrah fence posts, huge spherical saw blades and driftwood is often used as a canvas for her work resulting in quirky and creative art pieces.
She works with a variety of materials blending them together creating layers of interest in her work. Art pieces often incorporate threads, fibres, handmade papers and beads resulting in unique , exciting and vibrant, inspirational art.
Felting, stitching, weaving, silk work and collage are some of the varied techniques Heather uses to create her luscious textiles. Textile art pieces on show are in the form of large wallhangings , small framed art works, silk collages and woven pieces that incorporate recycled materials and beautiful textural yarns.
Heather runs regular art workshops at her studio teaching a wide variety of techniques.
Her energy, enthusiasm and passion for the arts, nature and life is apparent in her work.
Heathers art studio is a riot of colour and texture as is her beautiful large garden which is a painting in its own right. Three acres of creativity scattered with sculptures and mosaics. The fusion of colourful flowers and vegetables alongside driftwood arches and quirky metalwork make it a wonderful magical place to wander and relax in. Her garden is an ever evolving canvas.
